Spread by the Myraean Empire’s conquests, the religion outlasted the Empire and continues to be a significant cultural unifier in the old imperial lands. Myraea’s gods are interested and invested in the world, particularly in the fates of their followers. Their lessons are focused on building a strong society, and they value civic service. In keeping with this, Myraean priests and temples are often at the center of local life and provide many public services to their surrounding areas. The religion is worldly and views the right behaviour in an adherent’s mortal life to be of more value than their right belief. The Gods of Myraea can be found across Pyron and is the official, and sanctioned, religion in all the continental nations save New Myraea.

Gods of the Religion

Followers of the Gods of Myraea primarily worship eight primordial deities, along with several lesser spirits in the service of the Gods. The primordial Gods are detailed here.

Pyron
The greater Mother deity, whose corpse comprises the world. Pyron is the deity of life and undeath, of the natural order, and its perversion. Pyron is also the deity of cycles, and Its body passes through states where It is fully living, when the world blooms in spring and summer, and periods of death and undeath, during the autumn and winter. Though slain by Its children, the other gods, Pyron watches on, awaiting the time of Its return to prominence, when It will shake off the infestation of humanity and return the world to its natural order. The Spring is said to be Its beating and undead heart, and Manna Its blood.

Barimos
The first murderer, and mad god. Barimos is the god who murdered Pyron, paving the way for civilization’s rise in the world. They are the patron of soldiers, murderers, the disabled, the mentally ill, and civilization. Barimos plays an integral part in the creation story of the Gods of Myraea, for unifying the Gods against Pyron, and delivering the final blow against the Mother, as part of a gambit to create a world with humanity in it. Despite their integral part in the world's shaping, they do not rule and are not associated with the nobility or ruling classes, but with the common people instead. Barimos, in a fit of rage at the Empire’s treatment of the poor and disabled, inflicted the Cataclysm upon the continent as punishment, and a warning to future generations.

Ilin
The god of logic, strategy, and control. Ilin is a god of war, though he eschews the hot-blooded attacks that Barimos represents. He is a patron of officers and commanders and represents cold, rational stratagems. Ilin devised the plan, once convinced to do the deed by Barimos, for slaying Pyron, and directed the forces of the Gods against their Mother. He is wed to Zadkush, and brings his calm plans into his husband’s domains, resulting in prosperity for the world.

Pengalmet
Goddess of luck, fortune, and improvisation. Pengalmet is the patron of adventurers and thieves and listens to the prayers sent by any who need to create a plan on the fly. She is known for being unpredictable and fickle in her affections. Should a follower displease her, Pengalmet has been known to withdraw her support, often leading to untimely and gruesome ends for her formerly favoured. She was not included in the plan to murder Pyron—due to her unpredictable nature—but joined the Gods in their assault when it began, anyway.

Altariel
Goddess of magic, law, and dedication. Altariel is the Queen of the Gods and patron to Magi and Nobility alike in the mortal realms. Her temples are grand affairs, often doubling as local courthouses, and her priests are often trained as advocati besides their normal roles. She picked up the pieces and set the world in order after Pyron’s murder, laying the foundation for the societies of gods and humanity alike. Altariel taught the first Magi in Myraea, though her teaching was subverted by Barimos, who encouraged the Magi to rebel against the Nobility of the time. She is an active deity and has gifted insight and inspiration to key figures across history, such as Thessia and Risa.

Elereth
The goddess of wisdom, creativity, and joyous celebration. Elereth is a goddess of the people and is commonly worshiped at small shrines within taverns, brothels, and libraries. Her followers are encouraged to literacy, and her priesthood often travels with wine, story, and song, and scrolls for the populace. Elereth was the first of the gods to join with Barimos in the effort to slay Pyron, though she wept after the deed was done, labeling it a necessary evil for the world to take shape.

Zadkush
God of the harvest, families, and trade. Zadkush acts as the clerk of the gods, keeping a tally of all events that transpire in the world. He designates how much of each harvest will be usable, when children will be stillborn, and the fortunes of trade. His harvests are taken in agriculture, gold, Manna, and blood. Zadkush charted the path the world would take should Pyron be murdered, and it was his predictions that convinced many of the gods to act. He is married to Ilin and ensures that his husband always receives a bountiful harvest in blood and war. Mortals of all stripes pray to Zadkush, either asking for a bountiful harvest or begging the god not to write their name in his tally of those to be slain in the year.

Sekana
The deity of death, the natural order, and protection. Sekana is the youngest of the gods, having sprung forth from Pyron’s corpse upon the Mother’s murder. Xie acts as the sentinel and guardian of the gods, protecting them from Pyron’s wrath by ensuring the Mother can never fully return to life. Xie is the ruler of the Lenaean Field and is married to Altariel, who lives within Xir palace at the center of the land of the dead. Sekana ensures that the dead are sorted and awarded appropriately in the afterlife, and gives each a place in the Fields. Xie remains in the Fields at all times, though Xie emerged once during the Cataclysm. When Barimos inflicted the Cataclysm upon the Empire, Sekana rose from the earth and spread Xir embrace far and wide, ushering in a harvest bloodier than any the gods had imagined. Xie has a passionate hatred of the undead, and the creation of Revenants is a mortal sin to Xir; misfortune is said to befall any Magus so willing to pervert Sekana’s order.

Holy Days

The Myraean calendar is marked by the changing of the seasons, which represent the eternal struggle between Pyron and Sekana. The Spring Equinox is Pyron’s return from undeath into a living state, when the humans inhabiting Its corpse can plant and grow their crops; this day is considered the new year for Gods of Myraeaful and is a day of sacrifice to appease the Mother. The Summer Solstice is Pyron’s time of greatest strength, but also the time of Its downfall when Sekana’s efforts plunge it toward the long nights of undeath; festivals are held to celebrate the return of Sekana’s protection, but sacrifices from early harvests are still offered by way of apology to the Mother. The Autumn Equinox is Sekana’s holy day, marking Xir triumph over Xir Mother, and Pyron’s death; the day is celebrated with feasting, and the night is marked with communal celebratory bonfires. The Winter Solstice marks the depths of Pyron’s hatred for the humans inhabiting Its body, but also the time when Sekana’s hold on the Mother begins to slip and Pyron turns back toward the world of the living; it is common for offerings to be made at local rivers, lakes, and caves as gifts to Sekana so that Xie can restore Xir strength after the long battle with Pyron.

Though the changing of the seasons, and the unending struggle between Sekana and Pyron, is the primary marker of time in the Myraean calendar, there are a myriad of lesser holidays dedicated to the pantheon. Harvest festivals are dedicated to both Sekana and Zadkush. Graduation days from Magi’s Colleges are held on days sacred to Altariel and Elereth. Days commemorating battles and wars also involve holy rites for Ilin and Pengalmet. Barimos is given a day of appeasement on the anniversary of the beginning of the Cataclysm, hoping to avert future punishments of mortal society. Any day on which an event tied into a God’s interests can be made into a local festival, and many cities and towns have their own celebrations.

Vision of the Afterlife

Followers of the Gods believe that all sapient life has an Aura, which contains the essence of that being. When such a creature dies, its Aura lingers with its remains for eight days, after which it will either dissipate into nothing, or find its way to the nearest entrance to the Lenaean Field, the afterlife. Myraean funerary rites must be performed within those eight days, during which the family and associates of the deceased mourn the passing of the individual. The funeral itself is held on the fifth day, and the body is laid to rest on the sixth.

The common custom amongst followers is to wrap the body in a funeral shroud, weighted with the individual’s most valued possessions from their life, and any extra weights needed. The body is then brought by boat to the Drowned Lands, if possible, or to the nearest major body of water. It is submerged and sunk to the bottom, where it is believed that there are many entrances to the Lenaean Field. If any major parts of the body rise to the surface before the eight days have passed, it is believed that their Aura cannot reach the Lenaean Field.

The Lenaean Field itself is the domain of Sekana, the God of death and protection. Each of the Gods keeps a palace within the Fields, around which cities of the dead have arisen. The afterlife is one where the dead can be reunited with lost loved ones and ancestors, while pursuing their interests further. Those who perform exceptionally well are believed to be allowed a limited return to the world of the living, acting as messengers and servants of the Gods. Those whose services are deemed vital may be reborn into future generations.

Symbols

Each of the Myraean Gods has a primary symbol in the form of an abstract and simple image. These symbols are used so that the clergy of the Gods can easily mark items, locations, and individuals with a clearly recognizable image of their God. It also allows common worshippers to fashion items that showcase their belief, without needing any great skill or artistry. The Gods all have several other signs and symbols associated with them, in addition to the primary image.

Pyron: A circle with a dot in the center. An open eye. A skull.
Barimos: A broken crown. A burning sword. A frothing wave.
Ilin: A game piece. A shield. An armoured fist.
Pengalmet: A coin. A dice. A dagger.
Altariel: A manna crystal. A gavel. A tower.
Elereth: A scroll. A cluster of grapes. A lute.
Zadkush: A quill. A scythe. A stalk of wheat.
Sekana: Balanced scales. A flower blossom. A shaded circle.

The Gods of Myraea is the dominant religion across the continent of Pyron.
