These groups encompass and incorporate smaller ethnic subgroups, but we’ll only be covering the major groups here. Although each of the groups originated in a particular region of the continent, they’ve all spread across the land in modern times. Members of all ethnic groups can be found in any nation and are not limited to any language.

Myraean
The Myraean cultural group developed in the Myraean basin in the center of the continent. This central region was, for a significant period of Pyronite history, the continental heartland. The ethnic group and region both take their names from the city state of Myraea, which formed the Myraean Union and later the Myraean Empire. The Myraeans were one of three cultures to discover magic independently on the continent, along with the Farivik and Llini. The Myraean Empire would unify Pyron and send colonial expeditions to the Jade Lands and Suri. Its position of primacy on the continent allowed Myraean culture to become the standard by which all others were judged. The Myraean basin was flooded during the events of the Cataclysm and now exists as the Drowned Lands, a large sea dominating the center of the continent. Myraeans strongly value egalitarianism, a belief that hearkens back to the first College of Magi in the city of Myraea where anyone could attend. In modern times this value has shifted toward meritocracy, where individuals must prove their worth before being given access to power or status. Myraean families are large and extended affairs and often include adopted members in large numbers. Myraeans often have an olive skin tone, with dark brown hair and brown eyes. The primary values of the culture are meritocracy, scholarship, and loyalty to family.

Nakka
The Nakka are a cultural group that developed in the Nakar uplands bordering the Myraean and Celanish basins. The Nakka are the oldest of the civilized social groups in Pyron and had built their cities before any of the other cultural groups. These cities were once centers of slavery on the continent, but were liberated in the Guxalian Revolution. The Nakka are related to the Myraeans, and it can be difficult for outsiders to distinguish the two groups by appearance. The primary value of Nakka culture is hierarchy, and knowing one’s place within it. In ancient Nakka society this was enforced through a system of nobility, citizenry, and slaves. In modern times Nakar is ruled by the Republic of Ghux, which has a social system determined by wealth and College education. Although modern Nakka culture allows for greater mobility between positions in its hierarchy, members are still expected to adhere to their rank within the culture. The Nakka, like the Myraeans, place no importance on gender for determining position in the social hierarchy. Nakka families tend to be extended, but are almost always related by blood. Nakka often have dark hair and eyes, and a dark olive skin tone. The main cultural values are hierarchy, self-sufficiency, and strength.

Celanish
Celanmoor is an ancient cultural region rivaling Nakar in its age. The Celanish culture developed in the eponymous Celanish Basin, which dominates western Pyron. The first Celanish culture was a trade league of city states which eventually grew into an imperial power sufficient to challenge Myraea for a time. The value held most dearly by the Celanish is cooperation, which in ancient times resulted in creating an empire based on mutual respect and trust. In modern Pyron Celanmoor is once again an independent nation, but one embittered by its time occupied by other nations and losing its eastern lands; the value of cooperation has been twisted from one of peaceful cooperation to one of militaristic coordination toward a return to their former status. Celanish society places women as the dominant gender, with other genders working beneath a matriarch in most organizations. Families are led by a grandmother, with mothers and aunts cooperating to manage daily affairs; these families are extended and often create cooperatives between themselves and their neighbours. The most common Celanish skin tones are tawny beige, with brown eyes, and they commonly have hair that is light or dark brown. The primary cultural values of the Celanish are cooperation, prosperity, and status.

Vranlundi
The Vranlundi are a people dispossessed. They developed in the region now known as Fariv, but which they called Vranlundr. The arrival of the Farivik from their homeworld saw massive conflict between the nascent Vranlundi nations and the Farivik colonial forces, which the Vranlundi lost. Much of the Vranlundi population fled to the Halian plateau, forming the nation of Halfield; others fled north into the Myraean basin and became the Ker. Some remained behind and retained their identity, despite the occupation of their ancestral homeland. The ancient Vranlundi civilization valued peace above all; whether this contributed to their fall to the Farivik is debated by modern scholars. Modern Vranlundi continue to avoid conflict whenever possible, or to lay it to rest where they find it. Vranlundi society segregates important roles by gender, but does not consider one gender more important than any others. Their families are extended affairs, and often live in close quarters with other Vranlundi families as a matter of survival. Most Vranlundi families are led by grandparents, often magi, who manage affairs so that their descendents can focus on daily life. The Vranlundi commonly have umber brown skin tones, brown eyes, and dark brown or black hair. The primary social values are harmony, family loyalty, and survival.

Kerish
The Ker are one of two ethnic groups that split from the Vranlundi after the catastrophic loss of Vranlundr to the Farivik. Whereas the Halians settled the Halian plateau, and the Vranlundi remained in the ancestral homeland, the Ker fled north and became a nomadic people. The Ker developed as a distinct people during their time in the Myraean basin, much of which was marked by conflict with the local Myraean peoples. The modern Kerish population is centered in the Kerish desert, which itself is located in parts of the Nakar uplands and Celanish basin. The Ker value loyalty to group and people above all else. This served them during their exodus from Vranlund by keeping their people united. In modern times it creates a culture of tight-knit groups that often compete with outsiders. The Ker, like the Vranlundi, have clear distinctions between important roles in the family and society; however, the importance of gender in these roles has faded as Kerish society has been influenced by time spent living beside Myraeans. Kerish families are organized into clans with clear roles within each, and a strong sense of duty toward one’s clan and family. The Ker commonly have skin tones ranging from umber brown to golden brown, brown eyes, and dark brown or black hair. Their primary values are group loyalty, prosperity, and precision in the completion of tasks.

Halian
Halians are one of two ethnic groups that split from the Vranlundi after losing Vranlundr to the Farivik. While the Ker fled north into the Myraean basin and became nomadic, the Halians settled on the massive Halian plateau. This region had already seen some colonization by the Vranlundi prior to their wars with the Farivik, but it wasn’t until the exodus that the plateau became heavily settled. Historically, the Halians valued survival above all else, as they had fled a civilization destroying war and were refugees in an area of hostile wilderness. Over time their new culture was able to build the infrastructure and systems needed for survival to no longer be in doubt, but the trauma of the Halian exodus remains with the culture. Modern Halians continue to focus on the careful work of creating and maintaining the systems that allow for their population to survive on the plateau. Halians don’t privilege any gender above the others, but give significant respect to those able to carry children to term. These individuals are kept in positions of safety and power in Halian society, while those unable to carry a child are given more dangerous tasks. Halian families are organized around one or more individuals who are able to bear children, with their consorts, partners, and siblings acting to support them. Halians most commonly have umber brown skin tones, dark brown, or black hair, and brown eyes. Their primary values are survival, mutual aid, and harmony.

Llinish
The Llini are an ethnic group that developed in the Llinish highlands, which span across the central northern regions of the continent. The Llini were the last group on the continent to settle into large cities, except for the Ker. They spent much of their early development as nomadic tribes in the uplands, with only a scattering of outposts for rest. The tribes were one of three cultural groups to develop magic independently, along with the Myraeans and Farivik. The primary historical cultural value of the Llini was creativity, embodied by their story tellers turned magi. Over time the focus on creativity and creation led to the tribes creating great cities and great works of art, but also developing creative methods for waging war; eventually the emphasis switched to the use of their minds for conquest, and in today’s Llinish society valour is the most prized value. The Llini are a non-hierarchical people, and this extends to their view of gender as well. Individuals of all genders are equal to one another within Llinish culture. Llinish families come in two tiers, with the most important being the tribe; tribes are often large and can extend through multiple towns. The second level of Llinish family is the direct family itself, arranged around grandparents, parents, aunts, uncles, children, and cousins. These family units typically live in large houses and work together for mutual aid. The Llini typically have tawny beige skin tones, hair that can range from dark brown to blonde, and eyes that often include blue and green hues. The primary cultural values of the Llini are valour, creativity, and tribal loyalty.

Crastowen
The Crastowen are an ethnic group that developed in the great northern taiga and alpine mountains. The Crastowen developed settled cities before their southern neighbours, the Llini. These cities were smaller than the metropoles that flourished in the continental south, yet provided vital safe havens from the harsh conditions that the Crastowen found themselves within. The city-states of the north began to truly flourish and grow when significant trade was established with the Celanish trade cities, allowing for significant access to the many goods of the continent. The Crastowen, though not one of the cultures to discover magic independently, were one of the first to build a College of Magi, doing so at the city of Carmaerd. Modern Crastow is occupied by the Llinish Tywean Empire. The Crastowen heavily valued scholarship, leading to the creation of the College of Carmaerd; it was an honourable pursuit to attend the College and to learn the magic that had been introduced to the Crastowen by the Llini. Since the occupation of Crastow by the Llini, this focus on scholarship has become a focus on the preservation of the knowledge of the Crastowen against assimilation into the imperial cultural gestalt. The Crastowen have little need for enforced gender roles, instead relying on the labour of all individuals in order to survive in the harsh climate within which they live. Crastowen families are smaller than their southern counterparts and oriented around a group of parents and children as the primary family unit. Crastowen elders often live together in communal living spaces. The Crastowen often have a fawn brown skin tone, with dark brown or black hair, and brown eyes. The primary values of the Crastowen are preservation of cultural knowledge, survival, and scholarship.

Farivik
The Farivik are an ethnic group not native to Pyron. They arrived on the planet from a different world during a great migration. Knowledge of this other world has been lost over the centuries of their stay on Pyron. The Farivik first arrived in Vranlundr, the ancestral homeland of the Vranlundi. The invaders fought a bloody war that saw the Vranlundi dispersed from their homeland, which created the nations of Halfield and the Ker. Some Farivik crossed the ocean from their new territories and reached the Jade Lands and, eventually, Suri. The Farivik who remained on Pyron forged a great empire that conquered the continent’s southern reaches. They were one of three cultures to independently introduce magic to the continent. Their empire challenged Myraea and nearly won the imperial wars between the two. Modern Fariv has been conquered by the Myraean Empire, and again by the returning New Myraeans. The Farivik highly value strength, a value that carried them to the heights of imperial glory. This value remains their guiding star in modern times, even though their territory is occupied by foreigners. Modern day Farivik continue to work to improve their strength, in the hopes of one day winning their freedom, and once more building their empire. The Farivik do not consider gender and refer to all individuals with a gender neutral pronoun. The foreign conceptions of gender is a cause of confusion during interactions between members of the Farivik cultural group and outsiders. Farivik families are informal, with children being raised communally by groups of like-minded adults; these groups are not always related to the children by blood. The Farivik have a distinct appearance on Pyron, often having red-ochre skin tones and blonde or red hair colours, with brown and golden eye colours. The Farivik primarily value strength, rule of law, and piety.

Jade Lander
The Jade Landers, who call themselves the Ohauutla in their own language, are a cultural group originating with the Farivik and with mainlander Surese populations. The Jade Lands islands were colonized twice, first by small numbers of Surese, and then by the Farivik as they swept from Pyron to Suri. The Ohauutla developed from the merging of these two cultural groups, and share characteristics from both original groups. They also developed an independent culture from both Fariv and Suri due to the isolated position of their island homes. The Ohauutla have further been influenced by the colonial efforts of the Myraean Empire, and the occupation by New Myraea. The primary social value of the original Surese inhabitants of the islands was discovery and exploration. This value became subsumed by the Farivik value of rule of law after the Farivik migration. In modern times the value of rule of law retains its position of primacy within Jade Lander society. The Jade Landers, like the Farivik, disregard gender, and refer to everyone by a gender neutral pronoun. Their families retain much of the Farivik style, with children being raised by groups of like-minded individuals. However, unlike the Farivik, a strong emphasis is placed on the birth parent remaining part of their child’s life until at least puberty. The Ohauutla commonly have a red-ochre skin tone, with dark brown and black hair, and brown eyes. The primary social values of the Ohauutla are rule of law, prosperity, and creativity.

Surese
Although Pyronites refer to this ethnicity as Surese, this is a misnomer. The ethnic group referred to as such is only one ethnic group amongst many on the Surese continent. Called the Tlauhyotla in their own language, this group developed on the western peninsula of Suri. They formed the empire of Tlauhyotlan, known to Pyronites as the Red Empire, and were the Surese group that discovered and colonized the Jade Lands islands. Tlauhyotlan was heavily influenced by migration from Fariv, which has had a marked impact on Tlauhyotla culture and physical appearance. A second period of foreign influence came during Myraea’s colonial expeditions, which carved the enclave of New Myraea from Tlauhyotlan’s territory. The primary historical and modern value of the culture is service. This value has led the Tlauhyotla to form a heavily centralized nation, and to be far more communal minded than Pyronites. In modern times, after the defeat of Tlauhyotlan by Myraea, this ideal has seen the Red Empire pushed to greater lengths to rebuild its strength in the face of challenge by foreign powers. The Tlauhyotla, like the Farivik, do not have a concept of gender, and refer to all individuals by a gender neutral pronoun. This pronoun can be modified by where in Tlauhyotlan’s hierarchy the individual stands. The Tlauhyotla do not have families as Pyronites understand them, with their children being raised communally in groups by citizens assigned to the task. The Tlauhyotla commonly have red-ochre skin tones, dark brown, and black hair, and brown eyes. Their primary social values are service, strength, and hierarchy.

Pyron is home to a handful of major ethnic groups.
